How to Become a Barista at Home!

Want to start making delicious coffee beverages at home? Have an expresso machine and need some helpful tips? We got you covered! Sometimes, going out of your way to grab a morning cup of joe can be a hassle, and we are creatures of habit that always want to head to the drive thru. This is why I promote learning how to make coffee at home!

 1.) First Things First

You want to invest in a good quality espresso/coffee machine. This is not saying you must get an expensive one, but one that will give you quality espresso shots. Making espresso drinks at home may seem expensive and time-consuming. However, applying these simple tips will make it more efficient and and easy! You also want to make sure you regularly clean your espresso machine. Nespresso machines will have directions on how to clean it. If you don’t follow through with the cleanings, your espresso won’t taste as good and there will be lots of nasty build up.

2.) Work with Quality Beans

Then you want to grab some espresso beans. Both freshness and roast level are important when it comes to purchasing beans. You can’t make a quality espresso shot without making sure you have good beans. If you get an Nespresso, then all you need to get is Nespresso pods, which you can purchase on their website! Keep in mind that you can experiment with different beans to find the perfect one for you!

3.) Start With a Coffee Scale

As a beginner, using a scale regularly has many benefits! With the scale, you want to measure the dose (whole beans) and the yield (the output of liquid espresso extracted in the cup). Using a scale will help you replicate the same tasty espresso every time!

4.) Stay Curious and Critical

Keep in mind that you can experiment with how you want to make your espresso! There are many tools you can invest in and many machines to choose from! It all comes down to preference. If you start out by using a scale and work with fresh beans, that is already a big win. Steaming milk is also pretty simple once you have done it once or twice. Also, learning latte art is super fun and will challenge your barista skills! Happy brewing!
